On the second Sunday in May we celebrate Mother's Day in Australia, and I spent a lovely afternoon with my family at a late lunch/afternoon tea at a brewery restaurant, the Moody Cow, in the Ferguson Valley. But it felt strange not to be planning and cooking a meal for my mother today. I missed her.
Today I have been wondering where the years have gone, as I think about my mother who I lost in 2012, my daughter-in-law who lost her Mum suddenly and unexpectedly in 2008 while my daughter-in-law was carrying her second son, and my husband's mother who we are watching decline through dementia which has taken her back to when she was a young Mum. She talks about her own mother often.
It is a happy-sad time as I remember times and incidences from those passing years, and I my heart goes out to my daughter-in-law who misses her mother as much today as she did when she died. She lost her mother too soon. How much she needed her then as a young mum, and still needs her today.
When she died I cried over what her grandsons and granddaughter would miss without their GranDora in their lives.
And I think about the passing of the years, and how we should treasure every moment of them. I don't know if we do at the time......
What happened to these young women? When we look in the mirror do you still see the young woman who was? Or do you see on older woman, but still feel inside like that young woman but with more knowledge and experiences.
Our mother nutures us, and then the circle turns as we become mothers to our own children and, for some of us, to our parents.
Below is a picture of my sister and my Mum during a summer beach house holiday 1958 when I was 3. That's me on the right.
And here I am with my two beautiful sons on the beach in May 1982 - Paul was nearly 3 and Mark 9 months. Paul has is own two beautiful sons now.
and with my Mum and her first great-grandson - my first grandson - in December 2007 on his first birthday.
Those memories are precious, and I know our mother's will be forever in our hearts
These countries celebrate mother's day on the second Sunday in May - Australia, USA, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, FInland, Germany, Greeces, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and Turkey.
If you have celebrated Mother's Day today I hope if you have you have had a lovely day with your Mum and your family. If your Mum has passed on I hope you are blessed with special memories of her.
